What is the difference between a counsellor, psychotherapist, psychologist, and psychiatrist?
Counsellor / Clinical Counsellor
A counsellor or clinical counsellor is trained to help people cope with emotional, psychological, and relational challenges. In British Columbia, Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs) have a master’s degree and are registered with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC).
They offer talk therapy for issues like anxiety, stress, life transitions, and trauma—but they do not diagnose mental health disorders or prescribe medication.
Psychotherapist
The term psychotherapist is often used interchangeably with counsellor in many provinces, but it’s a regulated title in Ontario. Registered Psychotherapists (RPs) are licensed by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and also hold a master’s degree in counselling or psychotherapy.
Like counsellors, they provide talk therapy to support emotional and mental well-being, but they do not prescribe medication.
Psychologist
A psychologist typically has a doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) and is licensed by a provincial regulatory college. Psychologists are trained to diagnose mental health conditions, conduct psychological testing, and offer evidence-based therapy. They do not prescribe medication.
Psychiatrist
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MD) who specializes in mental health. Psychiatrists are licensed to diagnose mental illnesses and prescribe medication. They focus on medication management and work in hospitals or clinics. You typically need a referral from your family doctor to see a psychiatrist in Canada.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies based on your individual needs, challenges, and goals. Some clients benefit from a few sessions, while others find ongoing therapy helpful. This is your journey—there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Together, we’ll regularly check in on your progress and adjust the frequency or focus of sessions to support you in reaching your goals at a pace that feels comfortable and meaningful to you.
What happens during the free 15-minute consultation?
The consultation is conducted over the phone or virtually online and provides an opportunity to discuss your needs, understand what therapy may look like for you, and determine if my approach feels like a good fit. It’s also a chance to ask any questions about the process, fees, and expectations.
Do you offer in-person sessions, or are they online?
All sessions are conducted online at this time. Sessions are held on a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform, which protects your confidentiality and ensures that all communication remains private and secure.
Do you accept ICBC claims?
Yes, I am an ICBC-registered provider, and if you have an active ICBC claim with a claim number, you are pre-approved for up to 12 therapy sessions within the first 12 weeks following a motor vehicle accident. I bill ICBC directly for approved sessions.
What is your cancellation policy?
Life happens, and sometimes plans change. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please try to give at least 24 hours’ notice. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice, or missed appointments, will be subject to a fee of 50% of the session cost, charged to the card on file. This helps ensure we can continue offering timely care to all clients.
